Recently GSS received a letter from the SIA advising the requirements for licensing Door Supervisors in the UK are changing.

Additional physical intervention training is now required to become a licensed and qualified door supervisor from June 2010. All new door supervisors following this date will be required to have successfully completed and passed a physical intervention training course.

This means any training companies or tutors of door supervision will not be able to deliver a fully SIA licensed course without being trained, licensed and qualified to “Deliver Physical Intervention Training”.

We were immediately propositioned to create and teach the industry’s trainers physical intervention skills beyond anything anyone had done before. Basically we were tasked with teaching the private security industry’s training providers and tutors everything we knew about physical intervention skills and techniques.

We immediately started thinking what we could do, how we could do it. It wasn’t easy and you will see why….

Changes to the SIA Competency Specifications for Door Supervision

Following the ever growing risk of harm and prosecution, and at the request of the private security Industry, the SIA have changed the requirements for Training and Licensing Door Supervisors to reflect more up to date and relevant working practices. The new changes for Door Supervisors will now include additional Physical Intervention Training Skills. The new module is referred to as Escorting and Disengagement.

Further changes incorporated into the new award will cover more first aid content, awareness of terrorist threats and specific responsibilities for dealing with 14-18 year olds.

What Impact Will This Have On You or Your Organisation?

Door Supervisors

From June 2010 individuals who wish to become licensed door supervisors will require certification in the new SIA Physical Intervention module*.

*Individuals who have a current SIA approved qualification and have not yet applied for a licence can use their qualification as long as it was awarded less than three years ago. Door supervisor licence renewals following the changes may require certification in the new SIA Physical Intervention module, we will advise you once the SIA determine the criteria.

Training Providers

In order to deliver a complete door supervision training course or deliver the stand alone training physical intervention module trainers will need a licence and certificate in “Delivering Physical Intervention Training”.

As a training provider you will not be able to offer your clients and customers the training they require, this could be severely damaging to your business

The door supervisors course will increase from 3 days to 4 days if the physical intervention module is included

This will increase the cost of becoming a door supervisor for the end use and training provider alike

This specialised unit covers the use of restrictive escorting and holding techniques, addressing the area of safe and effective restraint and ejection. Safety is of the highest importance for both the restrainer and restrained, the unit focuses on raising awareness of the risks involved, ensuring candidates select and implement to correct holding activities during ejections, standing holds and escorts.

Disengagement

The disengagement unit demonstrates techniques on the separation and guidance of people, how individuals can protect themselves or others from assault, aggression or provocation. Course includes details on all the relevant law, medical implications and safe practice.
