SIA Licensing Background

Since 2003 it has been made essential that individuals working within the Private Security Industry must undergo structured SIA Training. From this individuals will achieve a recognised qualification. Those who don’t hold one of the SIA endorsed qualifications will have their SIA Licence application refused.

The SIA are working towards Setting, Maintaining and Raising the standards within the Private Security Industry; to enable them to accomplish this all security personnel have to have undertaken an SIA approved course and hold an SIA License To Practice to enable them to work within the Private Security Industry.

It is vital that everyone working within the Private Security Industry possesses the correct skills and knowledge in order to perform their duties safely and securely. Individuals can obtain a recognised qualification by undergoing an SIA Training Course and passing an exam. From this they can then receive a frontline licence in the following sectors:

  • Door Supervision
  • Close Protection
  • Public Space Surveillance (CCTV)
  • Security Guarding

The SIA do not directly deliver training courses or award qualifications. Instead the SIA have endorsed a number of Awarding Bodies to approve training providers, oversee the standard of assessment and award qualifications recognised for licensing.

Individuals who wish to attend an SIA Training Course that in turn will lead to an SIA recognised qualification are required to contact one of the approved awarding bodies. The awarding body will then provide individuals with details of approved training organisations that offer the relevant courses requested. On the other hand the SIA website and contact centre provides a list of training providers approved by the awarding bodies.

Depending upon the availability of courses the training process as a whole can be a prolonged period of time. However SIA Training will need to be completed before individuals can apply for their SIA Licence.

Only full certification from one of the listed qualifications accepted for SIA licensing offered by an endorsed awarding body will be acceptable evidence of meeting the competency criteria for a frontline licence.
